Traditional Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture

Introduction - traditional chinese medicine and acupuncture

The Chinese have used acupuncture for 3,000 years to treat disease and injury. Treatment consists of the use of fine sterile needles, acupressure (no needles) or Tui-Na (Chinese Medical Massage) at specific acu-points on the many meridian channels which run up and down the body; providing the routes for the body’s energy.

Patients are treated holistically, and as individuals, using in-depth history taking. In addition to the usual medical history, a medical history is taken according to the precepts of Traditional Chinese Medicine to ascertain the state of the body’s natural energy, called Qi (pronounced ‘chee’). Tongue and pulse diagnosis is also carried out to confirm the patient’s state of health from a TCM perspective. When this has all been done a TCM diagnoses can be made, and acupuncture, patent herbs or Tui-Na prescribed, or a combination of these, as appropriate.
